Bologna Meal Center

The new Meal Production Center of Lazzaretto was initiated by the Municipality of Bologna to create a new meal production platform in the north-western area of the city, in the expanding Zanardi – Lazzaretto district, and in anticipation of the reorganization of the city’s meal centers following the closure of the Casteldebole center.

The inauguration was attended by the Mayor of Bologna, Matteo Lepore, the Councillors for Education and Public Works, Daniele Ara and Simone Borsari, the President of the Navile district, Federica Mazzoni, and the Vice President of Camst, Mattia Grillini, along with the municipality’s technical staff, including Engineer Mattia Greco, Architect Roberta Bianconcini, Operational Director of Building Works, and Engineer Vincenzo Daprile, R.U.P. of the Municipality. Cairepro was represented by Engineer Letizia Gilardi, Operations Manager for Systems, and the President, Architect Nello Tafuro. Also present were Carlo Beltrami from Beltrami Costruzioni and Riccardo Valli, Project Manager.

The building covers an area of approximately 1,800 m² and is spread over two levels. It has a production capacity of 8,000 meals per day, primarily intended for school catering, implemented according to the “fresh-hot link” principle, with packaging mainly in multi-portion sizes.

Cairepro developed the entire completion project starting in 2016 (on an envelope designed by Mian Ingegneria), overseeing the urban planning aspects (site plans, drainage, stormwater management, and urban integration), architectural and building design, as well as the mechanical and electrical systems, and the internal architectural layout, including the equipment.

“This has been a very stimulating and demanding project, particularly due to the complexity of the pathways and functional aspects, from the integration of architecture and systems to energy management for the installation of equipment,” explains Arch. Armaroli of Cairepro, designer and coordinator of the specialized works. “We have worked continuously over these years, collaborating with the municipality’s technical staff and the meal production operators (Elior first, Camst later), in a constructive and effective dialogue to ensure that the project, once completed, would achieve high performance in meal production for the community.”

The Operational Management of the systems, led by Engineer Letizia Gilardi of Cairepro since 2021, efficiently managed the development of the construction site up to the final phase, overseeing the installation and integration of all systems works, achieving an excellent technical result.

The new Meal Production Center perfectly aligns with the energy savings and environmental sustainability requirements set by the latest national and European regulations. It features state-of-the-art technology for both air and water fluid production, thanks to the installation of heat pump units and high-performance air treatment units.
