Upgrading and restoration of a heritage-listed building

The project involved the seismic upgrading, major maintenance works, restoration and regulatory compliance upgrade of the Porta Romana Art Institute, a heritage-listed historic complex.

The design was developed through an integrated approach combining conservation requirements with performance improvements, with the aim of enhancing safety, functionality and long-term preservation while respecting the historical and architectural value of the building.

Fire safety

A key part of the project concerned fire safety upgrading, including the creation of ventilated fire lobbies serving the stair cores.

Specific-risk areas, such as workshops and archives, were also protected through new compartmentalisation measures and the installation of fire-rated doors.

The project also included the construction of an underground water reserve tank with pumping station, automatic inert gas fire suppression systems, and the integration of protective devices within the existing building services networks.

Building systems and technological upgrading

The project included the renewal and integration of safety-related technological systems, with new fire detection systems, emergency voice alarm systems, electrical panel upgrades and the adaptation of existing building services networks.
