Places of Worship
Religious and community spaces for the neighbourhood
The project concerned the integrated design of San Domenico di Guzman Parish Church, part of the programme for the construction of new places of worship in the peripheral areas east of Rome, launched for the Jubilee of 2000.
Geometric layout and organisation of the complex
The liturgical hall is based on a clear geometric figure, defined by a circle inscribed along the diagonal of a square. The parish facilities and rectory are instead organised through simple volumes, composed of interlocking parallelepipeds.
The main front faces the heart of the neighbourhood and strengthens the relationship with the pedestrian and cycle route connecting the civic centre, public park, church and schools.
Structure, materials and natural light
The entire complex is built with a reinforced concrete load-bearing structure, clad and never left exposed. Travertine and exposed brick define the external surfaces and ensure material continuity between the different building volumes.
Inside, the double circular ring encourages indirect light to enter the liturgical hall, while the timber roof helps define the character of the worship space.
