The project concerns the redevelopment and fire safety upgrading of Palazzo Poggi, the historic seat of the University of Bologna, designed by Pellegrino Tibaldi in the sixteenth century. The complex has gradually combined its original teaching function with offices, administrative services and spaces for students.
Palazzo Poggi also houses the Academy of Sciences of the Bologna Institute and the Museum of the Specola, located in the historic astronomical tower. The complex also includes the Carducci Hall, where Giosuè Carducci held his lectures, and the University Library, founded in 1712.
The executive design included a series of works to improve the safety and usability of the complex, involving escape routes, fire compartments, archives and some service areas. Some internal connections were also reorganised and new accessible toilet facilities were created, coordinating the works with the historic and protected spaces.
The upgrading also involved the building systems, with new fire detection and alarm systems, emergency lighting and fire suppression systems, as well as the compliance upgrading of the fire protection network. The solutions were developed to limit the impact on the most valuable spaces and integrate the new systems with the existing ones.
