Public Spaces, Places of Worship, Museums and Exhibition Spaces
The Expo Center project concerned one of the principal buildings within the Expo Milan 2015 site, after Palazzo Italia and Padiglione 0. The proposal was organised around three distinct yet integrated volumes, aligned under a single structural system, creating a unified architectural identity.
The three volumes were conceived to host complementary functions: the Auditorium, with a conference hall for approximately 1,500 seats; the Open Plaza, an open space for events and performances overlooking the Decumano; and the Media Operation Center, dedicated to monitoring and managing security for the entire exhibition.
The key element of the concept was a large metal roof structure, composed of a system of columns and three-dimensional trusses, designed to enclose the three volumes and coordinate their overall composition.
The architectural language was explicitly technical, based on the use of steel, glass and timber, in continuity with the tradition of major service buildings for World Expositions. The proposal was conceived within the broader Expo site framework, contributing to the creation of a recognisable and functional public space.
The concept was developed in coherence with the theme “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life”, taking sustainability as a guiding principle. Design choices considered the building’s full life cycle, from materials to structural and building systems solutions, through to dismantling.
The Expo Center was also conceived as an integral part of the exhibition site masterplan, based on the relationship between architecture, water, agro-environmental landscape and collective space.
Three volumes coordinated by a large metal roof structure, conceived as the defining element of the complex.
Project developed according to sustainability principles and in relation to the overall masterplan of the exhibition site.
