Recovery of the historic complex

The redevelopment of two buildings within the former San Giovanni Psychiatric Hospital complex is intended to accommodate functions serving the Department of Psychology of the University of Trieste.

Located in a setting of significant historical and cultural value, the project addresses the reuse of the existing built heritage through an approach focused on conservation and adaptation to new uses.

The new spaces include offices, faculty rooms, classrooms and study areas, organised to ensure functionality, comfort and quality in everyday use.

Restoration and conservation of the existing buildings

The project covered architectural, structural and MEP design, including safety coordination during the design phase and seismic vulnerability assessment.

The works were developed with priority given to the recovery of the existing structures, through restoration, strengthening and upgrading measures compatible with the original character of the buildings.

For building “F1”, the project included the recovery of the structures and architectural elements, the reorganisation of the internal layout and the renewal of building systems.
Building “F2”, originally used as a kitchen, was adapted to accommodate teaching spaces, while maintaining consistency with its original typological layout.
