Liturgical adaptation project

The liturgical adaptation of San Lorenzo Cathedral is based on a careful reading of the relationship between the new presbytery elements and the church’s historic architecture.

The design is guided by two key aspects: the scenographic role of the raised historic choir, which forms the architectural backdrop of the cathedral space; and the configuration of the interior decoration, organised in horizontal bands with geometric and floral motifs that highlight the rhythm of arches and pillars.

Materials and composition

The project reinterprets the theme of ornamental cladding in a contemporary way, drawing on the textile motif traditionally associated with sacred architecture. The altar, ambo and cathedra are made of layered stone bands, composed of nine different types of marble, in chromatic dialogue with the cathedral’s decorative system.

The result is a balanced composition that enhances the relationship between architecture, decoration and liturgical function.
