The project involved the demolition of the Enrico Fermi Middle School in Casina and the construction, on the same site, of a school building completely redesigned in terms of architectural configuration and performance. The previous structure no longer adequately met safety, energy efficiency and functional requirements, making a comprehensive redevelopment necessary.
The school is designed for six classes of up to 30 students each and includes spaces for staff, around 40 students attending the music programme, the administrative office and a 200-seat assembly hall. On the ground floor, the classrooms overlook a large internal garden, conceived as an extension of the learning spaces for outdoor activities.
The architectural and structural design was developed through all phases, from preliminary to executive design. The process was developed in a BIM environment, starting from a laser scanner survey and point cloud of the existing building, coordinating the different disciplines and supporting the control of costs and information throughout the design process.
Particular attention was given to energy and environmental performance, with the aim of reducing consumption, operating costs and impact on the surrounding context. The new building, classified as NZEB, translates these criteria into an efficient and sustainable school, designed as a reference point for the local community.
