Specialist centre for maternal and child health

The proposal concerns the new Salesi Maternal and Child Hospital within the Ospedali Riuniti of Ancona. The project interprets the facility as an independent, highly specialised structure dedicated to the health of mothers and children, integrating obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, paediatric surgery, paediatric onco-haematology and child neuropsychiatry.

The aim was to carry forward the historical legacy of Salesi and translate it into a contemporary healthcare system, where the quality of care is combined with greater attention to reception, comfort and well-being for patients, families and staff.

Architectural identity and relationship with the landscape

The complex is arranged over four levels and connected to the main hospital building, ensuring functional continuity with the existing facility. The architectural concept was conceived as a “home for mothers and children”, with a predominantly horizontal layout and a recognisable image, open towards the hilly landscape and the sea.

The perimeter balconies recall the tradition of seaside architecture. Natural light reaches deep into the interiors through large glazed surfaces, light wells and rooflights.
The proposal also included the design of the electrical, mechanical, ordinary lighting and emergency lighting systems, developed in line with the requirements of a complex healthcare facility.
