The project concerned the seismic improvement of the Parish Church of Castellarano, in the province of Reggio Emilia, a building of fifteenth-century origin. The activities were preceded by a complete laser scanner survey, which made it possible to accurately reconstruct the geometry of the complex and identify cracks and deformations accumulated over time.
The works involved the most structurally complex elements of the church, in particular the roofs, masonry walls and bell tower. Local interventions included new timber roof structures, tie rods and systems designed to counter overturning mechanisms, coordinated to improve the overall behaviour of the building.
On the bell tower, the concrete spire built in the 1950s, weighing approximately 43 tonnes, was removed, reducing the loads acting on the structure. The project also included the restoration of the bell frame. The activities were followed from the design phase through to construction supervision.
