The project for Circular Plastic in Borgaro Torinese involved the conversion of an existing industrial facility into one of Italy’s largest plants dedicated to the sorting and storage of plastic materials.
The selective demolition of part of the existing buildings made it possible to start a full reconfiguration of the plant, designed to manage a single material flow and separate it by polymer type and colour, sending approximately 80% of incoming waste to recycling facilities.
The architectural and structural design translated this transformation into a clear reorganisation of the operating areas, concentrating functions within the existing perimeter and limiting the use of new surfaces.
Receiving, sorting, pressing and storage areas were arranged to make flows clearer and easier to control, improving the overall efficiency of the plant. The definition of the new volumes was developed in line with production and management requirements, including a new office and changing-room building.
Building systems design was developed in direct relation to the production process, integrating technical equipment with the organisation of spaces and flows.
Fire safety played a key role in the design choices, due to the presence of stored plastic material. The protection system includes an underground tank for the fire-fighting water supply, supporting operational risk management.
