Urban public space regeneration

The project originated from the international competition promoted by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia for the regeneration of a large area in the historic centre, with the aim of transforming a traffic-dominated space into a place dedicated to slow mobility, social interaction and public use.

The project takes the form of a comprehensive redefinition of public space, restoring centrality to the two squares and reinforcing their role within the urban system. The project also received recognition in the “Design for All” category of the Innovation and Urban Quality Award.

Identity of the squares and enhancement of the urban context

The project enhances the two squares by assigning them distinct yet complementary characters. Piazza Martiri 7 Luglio takes on a more intimate role, while Piazza della Vittoria is defined as a broader and more representative civic space, with a strong scenographic dimension.

A central element of the project is the lighting system, designed to emphasise the architectural landmarks in the evening, particularly the Theater Romolo Valli, which becomes the visual and symbolic focal point of the urban space. This is complemented by a new fountain designed to reinforce the identity of the square.
